Lord Azreal Mythos is a resident of hightown in Albion and the uncle of Azure and Umber. When his niece and nephew arrive in the city while fleeing the Blight, he welcomes the two in his home. He is a businessman although his business is currently failing, which Umber hopes to rectify by finding treasure in the Deep Roads. He is also an apostate, tutoring Azure in her magic.

Lady Raphaella Arch is a young noblewoman in hightown and the love interest of Umber. She is an apostate, having been tutored by her family's close friend, Azreal. Because of her status as an apostate, she has been largely sheltered her entire life, barely being allowed to leave her home unescorted. When Umber comes to her parents seeking aid in Azreal's failing business, she offers him a proposition: she will give him 5 sovereigns for five nights of his company. While Umber mistakes this as a sexual proposition, Raphaella assures him that she only wants someone to escort her so she can be allowed to go out.
