Hunter and Blake Tilasm the Beetles by Zephyros-Phoenix Hunter and Blake Tilasm the Beetles by Zephyros-Phoenix
:iconcommentplz::icondonotplz::iconusemyartplz:
Man it's hard to give the twins facial expressions. They always look so serious. It's probably because of their mandible...mouths...thingies...

So I'm trying out a new style of coloring that's a little different from my usual cel shading. Gotta try new things to improve right? So what do you guys think? Is the style ok? I might try it out on some other stuff too. Also, with the circles, I thought it would be fun to switch the colors :3

Born Hunter and Blake Tilasm, Kabuto and Kuwaga are fraternal twin brothers and powerful users of talisman magic. Kabuto, the red horned beetle, is the head of the House of Tilasm and the older twin while Kuwaga, the blue stag beetle is the younger twin. The two are very close to each other and strive to keep their family line alive. Kuwaga is also in love with Sapphire the Kelpie.

Kabuto and Kuwaga the Beetle belong to *Zephyros-Phoenix

I've been thinking. The beetle brothers' opposing magic styles intrigues me, and it led me to an idea. Do with my theory as you see fit, but here it is:

Their talismans and personality traits made me think from looking at them, that they would totally opposite casting styles. Kuwaga's you said were more complex, but he couldn't cast as fast as Hunter. Kinda gives me the impression that Hunter dishes out the pain with tons of fast and devastating offensive magic, while Blake keeps them protected with shields and defensive magic. Reaons:

Personality: Hunter is more serious and has more "fire" in his spirit than Blake, and that is perfect for one who just keeps throwing out the hurt with energy bolts projected from the talismans. Blake's more reserved behavior (I think) is more suited to shielding, as this type of magic is more complex to produce, but requires A LOT of concentration and a cool head, much like what Blake has.

Talisman design: When I see jagged, I think 'pain', which is what the designs on Hunter look like. Blake's (in my translation) seem to depict a bubble with a dot (or person) inside of it, much like a shield.

I hope I'm not looking too deep into this, and I don't mean to sound like I'm trying to flesh out these characters for you, as they are your property. I just (for some reason I can't explain) find myself INCREDIBLY drawn to these characters. A dynamic duo, the last two members of their family, where one keeps on the pressure while the other keeps them both protected with magical barriers...Imagine trying to fight back, but you can't so easily as you are not only getting pummeled by a barrage of magical bolts, but you can't penetrate the defenses projected by the other one. they'd be one tough nut to crack and a FEROCIOUS tag team in that case, with each brother supporting the other with his own specialty. I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of that.

Man, I don't think I've seen that kind of devotion to my characters that wasn't from myself! Again, it warms my heart ^^

Their personalities were meant to reflect their casting style as you state in your theory, but their exoskeleton designs were mostly happing accidents. The key behind their markings was opposition. Where Kabuto had spikes, Kuwaga would have softer markings and vice versa. But I do love the way you think ;)

Well...what can I say? When I become a fan of something, I like getting involved...hopefully not too much to be annoying. I seem to have a habit of doing that sometimes, even if I don't mean to. But the wheels have been turning in my head even more.

On a whim, I remembered my comment on them being decent close-quarters fighters, having 4 arms and all. Well I looked up some information on real stag and rhino beetles. Get this:

By estimates by comparing them to other Sonic characters, I guess the brothers might weigh approximately 80-90 pounds. Proportionally, a stag beetle can lift about 50 times its own weight. So with that in mind, our good friend Kuwaga (if biology wins out) could lift, punch, or move an object weighing 4000-4500 pounds, that's about the average weight of a car. But...hold onto your hat.

Rhino beetles can go as high as 850 times their own weight...OH GODS! Again, if proven true, his brother Kabuto can lift, punch, or move an object that weighs 68,000-76,500 pounds. A fully loaded concrete delivery truck weighs about 70,00 pounds. Wrap your head around that one...Knuckles, eat your heart out.

WOW...was that as nerdy as I think it sounded? ^_^

Well that makes me feel incredibly flattered ^^ It really does!

No way! That is soooo cool! Every fibre of my being is screaming out right now that this needs to happen! And apparently I already had set weights for them. Kabuto weights 94 lbs and Kuwaga weighs 96 lbs. So that means Kuwaga can lift about 4800 lbs and Kabuto can lift nearly 79,900 lbs. You know, this puts the two on a whole new level in my mind. If you could, would you be able to show me the link where you read this?

Thank you so much for being so dedicated to bring to my attention such an interesting fact about the species! If you were to do this in the future for another, I truly would not mind ^^

Again, you are awesome.

it's awesome that you made two character tributes (and shout outs) to a certain pair of brothers from Power Rangers Ninja Storm

You know, this kind of reminds me of Power Rangers Ninja Storm, there are these two power rangers who have the power of beetles and their names are Blake and Hunter. Other than that. This is awesome

Thank you. If you look at their individual pictures, you will see in the description that I did base them off the Thunder Rangers. That's why Kabuto and Kuwaga's real names are Blake and Hunter.

Very impressive dynamic duo going on here. It is about time we saw some more bug-based Sonic characters. Couple of things worth mentioning:

1) The mouth design is original and unique. Plus, it gives them a new form of personality, as emotions would be expressed through verbal expressions, body language, and the eyes (I presume).
2) Doing beetles doesn't look easy, as real-life beetles have natural body armor, but you managed to capture that here. Both brothers actually look like armored bugs.
3) I read their character profiles, and I noticed that Kuwaga's stripes are more complex than Kabuto's. Does that have to do with his more complex talisman magic versus Kuwaga's faster magic, or is it just for decoration? And also, what sort of spells are cast by their talisman magic.
4) What other physical traits do they have (strength, speed, agility, etc.)
5) I gather they are skilled spellcasters, but with those extra arms, one would think they'd be pretty touph in fist fights too. Am I right, or not so much?

Sorry if this dragged on, but these characters in particular really fascinate me. Love the concept, love the design, and love the personalities for them. Awesome work.

Thanks for the amazing feedback! I'm really glad that they interest you. Feel free to visit my wiki for more information on them and my other Sonic characters, if you'd like ;)

In terms of their stripes, it was really more of a design choice. Despite being twins, they aren't identical and I wanted their decorations to reflect that. To be honest, since I made Kabuto first, Kuwaga's round lines and diamonds are meant to be the opposite shapes to Kabuto's zigzag lines and circles.

They would probably be very adept in hand to hand combat. I imagine they would have some training, since some of the other families in their home specialize in close up magic tied with physical combat. They can both fly and would easily and very quickly climb along walls and other odd surfaces. Probably have above average strength too.

Their talisman magic is dependent on the symbols carved onto the actual talisman. Different symbols and combinations of symbols can carry out different effects, but it also depends on the energy and skill of the user. Common effects would be barrier fields, energy bolts or even elemental powers. Since they're part of the supporting cast, I won't be going too much into the details of their talisman magic (ie, which symbols do what) unless it becomes a major part of the story.

I see. What wiki? Link please.

And about the magic; very cool idea. For some reason, when I first saw them and read up on the magic, I almost pictured Kuwaga as a supporting role, using shields, barriers, and other forms of protective magic, since he's more adept at the more complicated forms. Kabuto would be a mean combat caster though, since he can whip out those spells a lot faster. I dunno. They are your characters, but that's what I saw in them, since they are sort of the twin attack team here.

[link] It's really mostly a database so I can keep track of all the characters I make, fan and original.

I kinda see that too, especially given their personalities. lol

You should probably just give them regular mouths. I mean, Charmy's a bee, but he has a mouth like Sonic and the others too!:meow:

I was considering it (the other option being beak-like mouths), but I really wanted to emphasize the fact that they are bugs. I mean, if they're going to be bugs, they should at least have bug-like mouths. One of the things I've always hated about Charmy is that aside from the stinger, wings and antenna, he doesn't look that much like a bee (to me at least).

You have right. Like identical spheres. Add a Umber (blue), Azreal (red), Lobo (yellow) and Nine-tailed Red (samurai green) and we have a Ninja Power Rangers complet.
